Democratic Congressional Representation of the 15th District
Posted January 29th, 2012 by cmohr152@aol.comWe have two Democratic candidates for the 15th District Congressional seat, Pat Lang, the Athens Law Director, and Scott Wharton, a farmer from Amanda. Pat Lang has visited the UAPA Coffee and Conversation event on January 7, 2012. UAPA has not been contacted by Scott Wharton. The most important thing UAPA members can do to change the politics of obstruction in Washington is to regain the 15th Congressional seat for a Democrat.
At Coffee and Conversation, Pat Lang informed UAPA about the redistricting changes in the 15th. The original redistricting map had the 15th as a snake-shaped monstrosity that was only 43% Democratic—a no-win situation. The compromise redistricted 15th is now 47% Democratic. And with President Obama on the ticket, the 15th is in definite play.
How can UAPA members help?
- Vote for a Democratic candidate on the primary on March 6th. We’ll be in great shape if the Democratic candidate gets more votes than the Republican incumbant. We can make it happen!
- Save the date of Saturday, May 26 for the Grandview Memorial Day Parade. This is a proxy of political strength, and all the candidates will be there—we’d better be there too. About 100 people is the target. The Republican in the race will certainly have that many.
- Join the UA for Lang or the UA for Wharton campaign. Design signs, t-shirts.
- Facebook friend your favorite candidate.
- Bookmark the webpage of your favorite candidate.
- Invite your favorite candidate to come to your event; pancake breakfast, Mardi-Gras festival, picnic. The candidates need visibility in UA to win, and UAPA members know the events to get visible at.
- Do doorknocks for your candidate. No kidding, shoe leather is the number one way to get votes in UA. Ask any City Council member.

ELECTION DAY EDITION: Campaign Update, GOTV Sign Up, Polling Location Confirmation and Sample Ballot
Posted October 31st, 2010 by uamak

ELECTION DAY EDITION
If ever there were a time to make a last-minute commitment to help get out the vote (GOTV), now is the time and Ohio is the place! There is a reason why the pundits aren't lumping Ohio in with the rest of the states this mid-term election. It's because the Ohio Democratic Party has built the largest grassroots mobilization machine of any state. This machine is working to elect candidates up and down the ticket. And they're seeing their efforts pay off in Ohio's early voting, which Democrats are winning.
We are in a dogfight at the top of the ticket -- Governor Strickland is slightly ahead of his opponent, and Democrats are seizing the momentum, but the GOP is flooding Ohio with special interest cash and out-of-state "volunteers" in a last-ditch effort to win.
The next 2 days will determine who wins Ohio, who controls Federal and state redistricting, who controls the U.S. House and U.S. Senate and whether Ohio will be there to serve as a crucial "firewall" for President Obama's re-election in 2012.
BE A PART OF HISTORY. BE A PART OF THE GOTV EFFORT!
WE NEED EVERY MINUTE YOU CAN SPARE ON ELECTION DAY TO HELP PUT GOVERNOR STRICKLAND AND OUR CANDIDATES OVER THE TOP. We need phone callers to keep calling our targeted voters until they have gone to the polls to vote. We need door knockers to knock on doors to encourage our targeted voters to go to the polls and vote. We need people to drive voters to the polls so they can vote.
Let's keep the momentum going. Democrats continue to vote early in larger numbers than Republicans.
- More Democrats than Republicans have requested ballots.
- More Democrats than Republicans have returned ballots
- More Democrats than Republicans have voted early in person.
- Five times more infrequent voting Democrats -- whose turnout is key to our victory -- have voted early than have infrequent voting Republicans (infrequent voters generally vote only during presidential election years.)
BE A PART OF HISTORY. BE A PART OF THE GOTV EFFORT!
By an 11-point margin, more Democrats than Republicans are voting early.
- To date, slightly over 900,000 Ohio voters have requested mail-in ballots. Democrats lead in these requests 41 to 30 percent.
- So far, of the ballots cast either in person or by mail, Democrats lead 44 to 33 percent.
- Republicans concede that they are behind in early vote returns.
We continue to add capacity to our superior GOTV effort that will carry us to victory on Tuesday.
- The Ohio Democratic Coordinated Campaign has been called the strongest in the country by Chuck Todd of MSNBC, and E.J. Dionne of The Washington Post.
- Our Republican opponents admit they lack the resources to match our organization strength (Columbus Dispatch, 10/20/10).
- With 300 staff and thousands of volunteers, the ODP has assembled the most robust Get Out the Vote operation in Ohio mid-term election history.
BE A PART OF HISTORY. BE A PART OF THE GOTV EFFORT!

A message from one of our readers . . .
THE DEMOCRATS ARE MISSING AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE
Why isn't anyone telling the following to the many 2008 Obama voters who have gotten complacent because Change hasn't happened quickly enough . . . ?
The Change you voted for in 2008 has already been difficult enough to achieve because of the Party of No. If you don't vote and the Republicans increase their numbers in Congress, you will be directly contributing to a further slowing (and even reversals) of the Change we all voted for.
Please don't sit on the sidelines and allow this to happen.
TO GIVE THE CHANGE WE VOTED FOR A CHANCE, YOU MUST VOTE AND YOU MUST VOTE FOR CONGRESSIONAL DEMOCRATS.
This is a huge message that would reach those many 2008 Obama voters who aren't planning on voting. If they want Change they voted for in 2008, they need to see an important reason why they MUST vote during this election.
[Along these lines, a Newsweek poll shows President Obama's approval rating going up and Democrats closing the enthusiasm gap. Read the entire article HERE.]

The Importance of Voting all the Way Down the Ticket -- Especially for Judges!

The Democratic candidates for Judge, from the Supreme Court to the Court of Common Pleas, deserve your consideration and attention, and if they meet with your approval, your vote. Judicial candidates work hard in campaigning against great odds. They have a hard time raising money and paying for TV ads and often get drowned out by the higher profile statewide races.
The candidates who win will occupy important offices in our court system and will be in a position to affect public policy. We need a balanced judiciary, and these candidates are worthy of your consideration and support.
Your Progressive candidates for judge are:
Chief Justice Eric Brown for Chief Justice Supreme Court (www.brownforohio.com)
Judge Mary Jane Trapp for Supreme Court (www.maryjanetrapp.com)
Judge Julia Dorrian for Court of Appeals (www.judgedorrian.com)

IT'S UP TO YOU!

WE NEED YOU!
Next to voting, the most important thing you can do this election
is to turn registered voters into actual voters.
The only way we keep Ohio on the path to recovery is to mobilize our base to elect Progressive leaders. Right now, we accomplish that through voter contact and GOTV - get out the vote.
Volunteer activities based out of the West Broad office from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
3649 West Broad Street, Columbus (map link)
Here's how you can help:
1. Canvass - Recruit a friend to go door-to-door with you to contact targeted voters. These are progressives, and will 99% of the time be friendly and open to your message. Remember, we're trying to mobilize the base.
2. Phone Bank - You can phone bank from your own home with your own computer. Easy, flexible and accommodating! Again, we're targeting the base.
3. Volunteer Recruitment - Call previous 2008 volunteers and ask them to help with GOTV. More volunteers = better results!
4. Ballot Chase - Contact progressive voters who requested or received absentee ballots and encourage them to vote for progressive candidates all the way down the ballot and to return the ballots.
5. Get Out the Vote Drive - October 30 to November 2
Canvassing only out of 3649 West Broad Street -- Shifts are 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; 12:30 to 4:00 p.m.; 3:30 to 7:00 p.m.

WHY IS GOVERNOR STRICKLAND
THE BEST CHOICE FOR OHIO?
Click here for Yvette McGee Brown's response!
The Governor enjoys wide support from Democrats, Independents and Republicans alike. Local construction CEOs, retail and banking executives, hospital administrators, philanthropic leaders and university presidents have come together in support of the Governor. The President and CEO of the Columbus Partnership, a Republican, who previously served as the economic development director and as deputy governor in Tennessee, is an enthusiastic and outspoken ally of the Governor's because of his successful efforts to attract new jobs to our state. (The Columbus Partnership is a civic organization of community, business and philanthropic leaders whose goal is to improve the economic vitality of Central Ohio.)
Despite this global recession, Ted Strickland has worked diligently, earnestly and effectively on our behalf to put Ohio on the road to recovery.
A vote for Governor Strickland is a vote for continued recovery.
Share these facts with your friends:
1. Ohio's unemployment rate dropped for the 5th consecutive month in September.
2. The Philadelphia Federal Reserve Board reports that Ohio has the 6th fastest growing economy in the country and is one of the top 10 states for job creation in 2010.
3. When the Governor took office, Ohio's small business climate ranked 38th in the country. Today it's ranked 11th nationwide and the best in the Midwest.
4. Under Governor Strickland, individual state income taxes have gone down more than 17%.
Over the past 4 years, Ohioans have experienced
the largest reduction in individual taxes in Ohio history.
5. The Governor has reduced corporate taxes $1.6 billion, and Ohio has the lowest corporate tax rate in the Midwest.
6. Even in these tough economic times, the Governor remained committed to education and increased K-12 education funding by 5 1/2%.
7. When the Governor took office, college tuition was increasing 9% each year. Governor Strickland froze college tuition for 2 years, and because of his leadership, Ohio college students have experienced the smallest college tuition increase since 1960.
8. Ohio was recently named among the best states for new college graduates based on job openings, salaries and affordable living according to a Bloomberg Businessweek/Aftercollege.com survey.
9. Governor Strickland passed an energy bill that set ambitious targets for renewable and advanced energy to create new industries and bring jobs to Ohio. The bill also stops electricity prices from skyrocketing and worked with utility companies to protect Ohio consumers and businesses from volatile rates by ensuring stable prices for electricity.

GOVERNOR'S RACE VERY TIGHT -- EVERY VOTE WILL COUNT
Political insiders in Ohio are continuing to shake their heads about the trumpeting of Quinnipiac Poll results by our hometown paper (some might say Republican Rag), The Columbus Dispatch. We all remember that the Quinnipiac Poll on October 23, 2008, declared that there was a 14 POINT MARGIN in the Presidential race in Ohio -- a race that was won by the President by 4 points, after the best organized and staffed Democratic GOTV effort in Ohio history. NO ONE with any sense puts any credibility in the Quinnipiac Poll.
Internal campaign polls from trusted and reliable pollsters show Governor Strickland with a lead in a very tight race that will likely be determined by voter turnout on Election Day.
So WHY are the Quinnipiac Poll, The Columbus Dispatch Poll and the Ohio Poll so far off this year? It is because they are "overweighting" Republican turnout versus Democratic turnout. They have bought in to the "enthusiasm gap". They couldn't be further from reality in doing so here in Ohio.
The facts (based on actual data as of October 20, 2010) show that more Democrats than Republicans are voting early. An internal tabulation of all 88 counties shows the following:
-
More Democrats than Republicans have requested absentee ballots.
-
More Democrats than Republicans have returned absentee ballots.
-
More Democrats than Republicans have voted early in person.
The race for Attorney General is similar with Rich Cordray leading in a very tight race. This scenario is repeated down the ticket. Currently, the state party is focused on their "Final Push" program, which is the largest GOTV effort in Ohio's mid-term election history.
YOUR HELP IN THE VOTER CONTACT EFFORT IS VITAL TO THE SUCCESS

Press Conference and Rally for Mary Jo
In response to the most recent Stivers advertisement, which accuses Mary Jo of voting to ship jobs to China, the campaign has filed for an injunction against the airing of the ad. We need volunteers to join us in support of Mary Jo outside of the Ohio Republican Party while a press vonference is held. Please come in your Mary Jo green. We will have a few t-shirts and plenty of stickers and signs. It is very important that we have a very strong showing, as the conference will most likely get press covereage.
Please RSVP to Brittany Brown at bbrown@ohiodems.org or 614/545-4070. Thank you for your support!

We've been planting free candidate yard signs all over UA --- at over 125 locations so far. To the right is the map for just the signs that UAPA has placed over the last two weeks.
Now we need your help to cover this map completely with push pins.

- Or order your free yard signs online here and we'll deliver and plant them at your location!

Democratic Candidate Sign Theft
Thefts of Democratic yard signs began last weekend with one or two incidents and increased quite a bit this past weekend. In each of the incidents reported to us, there were Republican yard signs one or two yards away that were not taken. In some cases, there were several incidents in a single neighborhood.
We are taking the only effective course of action – replace them as soon as possible after the theft is reported.
If your sign is stolen, submit your sign replacement request here.

1. Obama's speech to Gen44 tonight knocked our socks off. It's on CSPAN here. If you've forgotten why many of you worked so hard for this guy, and felt hope for the first time in many years, watch it.
2. USA Today Op-Ed: How to fight Tea Party's faux populism by Sherrod Brown. Money quote: "Bring back pre-existing conditions. Vote Republican."
2. From President Obama's Rolling Stone interview:
"It is inexcusable for any Democrat or progressive right now to stand on the sidelines in this midterm election. There may be complaints about us not having gotten certain things done, not fast enough, making certain legislative compromises. But right now, we've got a choice between a Republican Party that has moved to the right of George Bush and is looking to lock in the same policies that got us into these disasters in the first place, versus an administration that, with some admitted warts, has been the most successful administration in a generation in moving progressive agendas forward.
....If we want the kind of country that respects civil rights and civil liberties, we'd better fight in this election. And right now, we are getting outspent eight to one by these 527s that the Roberts court says can spend with impunity without disclosing where their money's coming from. In every single one of these congressional districts, you are seeing these independent organizations outspend political parties and the candidates by, as I said, factors of four to one, five to one, eight to one, 10 to one.
We have to get folks off the sidelines. People need to shake off this lethargy, people need to buck up. Bringing about change is hard — that's what I said during the campaign. It has been hard, and we've got some lumps to show for it. But if people now want to take their ball and go home, that tells me folks weren't serious in the first place.
If you're serious, now's exactly the time that people have to step up."

We are taking the only effective course of action – replace them as soon as possible after the theft is reported.
If your sign is stolen, submit your sign replacement request here.
