UAPA Action Alert
2010 Mid-Ohio Food Bank Drive - This Weekend
Posted January 21st, 2010 by uamakIn celebration of Martin Luther King Day and President Obama's inauguration last year, progressive volunteers organized a food drive to benefit the Mid-Ohio Food Bank that raised almost $3000 in cash and 3000 pounds of food, and we hope to repeat that success again this weekend! Volunteers will be conducting a food drive this Friday through Sunday, January 22-24, in their neighborhoods to once again benefit the Mid-Ohio Food Bank.
Join us in canvassing your neighborhood for food and cash donations. The only requirement is to hand in your donations at a drop-off location (identified below) near your home by Sunday afternoon at 5:00 PM.
Donations will be delivered to the Mid Ohio Food Bank on Monday, January 25.
If you aren’t able to canvass, please consider dropping off food donations to one of the drop-off locations listed below. Encourage friends and family to drop off donations as well by forwarding this Action Alert on to them. Here are some sobering statistics to consider:
- Nearly 20% of children in Ohio live in poverty.
- Food requests at the Mid-Ohio Food Bank pantries are up 15% over last year.
- For every $10 donated, the Mid-Ohio Food Bank can provide $80 worth of wholesome groceries to those who need a helping hand.

July 23, 2009 • UAProgressiveAction.com
We need your gently used donations!
Our third annual Community-Wide Garage Sale will be held August 8, 9:00 - 2:00 p.m. at the same location as last year, Roy and Agnes Butler's home, 2174 Ridgeview Road, on the northwest corner of Ridgeview and Redding Roads.
This annual event provides much of the funds that keep UAPA strong and ready for the next challenge, as well as provide progressives like you with information, education about progressive politics, and the opportunity to socialize with like-minded friends and neighbors.
Please start emptying your attics, basements and garages for gently used items. Popular sellers are furniture, household items, sporting goods, working appliances, garden tools, and knick knacks. Children's furniture, accessories and large toys also go quickly. We cannot accept any clothing because it just doesn't sell.
Start gathering donations today and, if necessary, we can pick up the items on August 7th. Please contact Jim Fronk at 488-1235 or email him at jfronk3@gmail.com to arrange for pick up if necessary.
Volunteers are needed to help work the sale. Please call Jim Fronk at 488-1235 to volunteer for either a morning or early afternoon shift.
We will update you with more details, including the location of where to drop off items.

President-Elect Obama Calls for National Day of Service
![]() |
When Barack Obama was elected president, he set forth this challenge in his victory speech, "Let us summon a new spirit of patriotism; of service and responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves, but each other."
Beginning this weekend, each of us has an opportunity to answer this call to serve.
President-elect Obama is calling on all Americans to participate in a National Day of Service on Monday, January 19, Martin Luther King Day. One hundred events are being held across Franklin County that focus on health and hunger. Here in Upper Arlington and Northwest Columbus, organizers are tackling the hunger crisis that increasingly ravages the least fortunate of us in Central Ohio. It is estimated that one in 10 Ohio families will need assistance with food this winter. Let's do our part to make sure that the Mid-Ohio Food Bank is stocked and ready to address that need.
Here's how you can help:
- Go to www.USAservice.org to identify a drop-off location where you can donate non-perishable food and checks to benefit the Mid-Ohio Food Bank from January 17-19. (Click on "Find an Event", type in your zip code and search a 10-mile radius.)
- Volunteer to go door-to-door to collect for the Mid-Ohio Food Bank on either January 17, 18 or 19 by e-mailing Robyn Harper at robynharper@sbcglobal.net.
- Give generously with either food or check when a volunteer comes to your door collecting.
Please also consider calling our local Red Cross at 1-800-448-3543 to schedule a time to give blood at the Carriage Place Donor Center on Bethel Road. Can't spare the time? You can make an on-line donation to the Mid-Ohio Food Bank at www.midohiofoodbank.org. If possible, please identify your donations as coming from UAPA for tracking purposes.
Your help, whether by donation or time, will relieve someone's pain. Learn more about these and other area events by going to www.USAservice.org, then share this information with your friends and encourage them to get involved.
Thank you for making a difference!

Senator Obama headlines downtown rally on Friday

Senator Barack Obama is paying a visit to Central Ohio on Friday, and he needs your help. The Ohio Campaign for Change needs volunteers to make the downtown Columbus rally a success! The "fierce urgency of now" is upon us with Election Day less than four weeks away, and this Friday, October 10th, kicks off the final 25 days of this historic campaign!
All the details have not been determined yet, however, volunteers are needed to help run the event from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Friday. So, if you can help, email tmanor@ohioforchange.com with your name and cell phone number. If you have any questions, call Tal at 436-0936 office or 783-8147 cell.
Please pass this message on to any friends who might be interested in getting involved.
Together we will win this election and change the country, because we all know that the road to the White House goes through Central Ohio!
Keating Economics
Voters deserve to know that the failed philosophy and culture of corruption that created the savings and loan crisis then are alive in the current crisis -- and in John McCain's plans for our economic future.
Here's a superb 13-minute documentary about John McCain's role in that financial crisis.
It is documentary quality, sobering, narrated by one of the original Keating-5 investigators, and absolutely devastating to John McCain's claims to be a born-again reformer.
It should be seen by every American, and everyone who is going to vote in the presidential election.
Watch it now and share it with your friends.

UA Library Board member sponsoring creationist talk at UAHS
Posted February 8th, 2008 by sdybiec |
UA Library Board member sponsoring creationist talk at UAHS
A young earth creationist, intelligent design (ID) advocate and philosophy professor Paul Nelson, will be speaking at Upper Arlington High School on Feb 11th. A UA Library Board of Trustees member, Bryce Kurfees, is listed as the contact on the event's invitiation.
UAPA is concerned about this presentation because:
- Nelson and the ID advocates explicitly aim to change school science curriculum to include the pseudo-science of intelligent design. Ohio religious fundamentatlists groups have a history of trying to inject creationism into the science classroom, using high-ranking elected Republicans to support them.
- the Discovery Institute to which Nelson belongs, is primarily a political lobbying organization, not a scientific research organization
- intelligent design is a disguised form of creationism and legislating it into the science classroom is a direct attack on the scientific method. If ID wants to be in the science classroom, it should follow the path of any scientifically verifiable, testable theory by engaging in the scientific peer journal review process. Non-scientific theories about our origins belong in philosophy or comparative religion classes, not the science classroom.
- pitting evolution vs. intelligent design implicitly tells students wishing to accept the overwhelming evidence for evolution, they must abandon God. This sets up a false dichotomy that undermines both science and religion.
- the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the largest association of scientists is clear:
- "... that the lack of scientific warrant for so-called 'intelligent design theory' makes it improper to include as a part of science education;"
- "... AAAS urges citizens across the nation to oppose the establishment of policies that would permit the teaching of "intelligent design theory" as a part of the science curricula of the public schools;"
